Lush, refreshing and culturally inspiring - Bali impresses with its beach-side charms.

Most of Bali is so picturesque that you could be fooled into thinking it was a painted backdrop: rice paddies trip down hillsides like giant steps, volcanoes soar through the clouds, the forests are lush and tropical, and the beaches are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Of course Bali has beaches, surfing, diving and resorts great and small, but it's the essence of Bali - and the Balinese - that make it so much more than just a fun-in-the-sun hot spot. It is possible to take the cliché of the smiling Balinese too far, but in reality, the inhabitants of this small island are indeed a generous, genuinely warm people. There's also a fun, sly sense of humour behind the smiles; upon seeing a bald tourist, many locals exclaim 'bung ujan' (today's rain is cancelled) - it's their way of saying that the hairless head is like a clear sky. Interesting Fact: Each year in March or April, most businesses in Bali shut down for a day for the Hindu festival of Nyepi. Many Balinese believe that if the whole island stays quiet at this time, visiting evil spirits will think no one is there - its an interesting time to be a tourist!

Villa v’s Hotel in Bali

A popular question especially for first time visitors to Bali is choosing a villa or a hotel?
For first time visitors, it is important to understand that you do not need to stay on a beach to have a great location in Bali. Many of the best hotels and villas are not on the beach, and several of the best beaches do not have accommodation, and may not be in a “main stream” area. Unlike destination resorts in say the Maldives, you will miss most of what the island offers if you just go to one place (whether hotel or villa) and stay there for all your beaching, eating, and relaxing. A car is a great advantage, and the best way to experience the island is to visit its various beaches, many of its diverse warungs (local name for café), and scenic villages. Renting a luxury villa or private home can be a great alternative to booking a hotel whether you are traveling to Bali as a family or with a group, cherish the experience of immersing yourself in the local culture and community, or are looking for more privacy and autonomy than a hotel can ever offer. Bali Private Villas – About Our Canggu Location

Leacott Retreats private villa is specifically in the suburb known as Tibubeneng which is on the boarder of Canggu village and Berawa village. Canggu is located about 10-15 minutes from the hip crowd of Seminyak and 15 minutes from Tanah Lot temple, is an old-fashioned fishermen village featuring one of the most untouched beaches on the southwest coast of Bali, back to the traditional Bali and away from the hustle and bustle of international tourism.

Canggu is a traditional village featuring vast uncrowded beaches, numerous local shops and eateries, and rice fields at every turn. Canggu is a great place to stay if you want to experience the more authentic, natural side of Bali while being in close proximity to the restaurants and nightlife that Bali is famous for. The beach in Canggu is secluded with no beach vendors, the waves are great for surfing, and there are rice paddies dotted with private villas, an indigenous hotel called Tugu by the ocean, and a temple called Batu Bolong (meaning a rock with a hole).

Our Leacott Retreats residence is located about 5 minute drive from the hip crowd of Seminyak and 15 minutes to Legian and the hustle and bustle of Kuta. This location is a great place if you want to experience the more authentic, romantic and natural side of Bali, while being in close proximity of chic and international selection of restaurants and nightlife.

Within a 5 minute walk from our private villa there are 2 mini-marts, a local market and numerous small restaurants and cafes to satisfy your hunger. You can try the new Canggu Café, or even head across the road from Canggu Club to the new Canggu Plaza where you will find an all you can eat Argentinian restaurant, the popular La Trattoria and even a new sushi café.

World renowned surf breaks at Berawa and Echo beaches are located a short distance away, and other great and un-crowded waves can be found in close proximity.

Surf Breaks Near Canggu - Leacott Retreats, Private Villa Location to Surf

Ok so you are traveling to Bali and wondering just where is this villa in relation to the surf? Well, there are the 3 main breaks at Canggu but there are also a few more options in the area easily accessible from Canggu. Or a short drive north or south, such as to Berawa or Pererenan. On small days in the waist to head high range there are waves to suit pretty much everyone. However, as it reaches the head to double head high the right hander at the river mouth turns on and can really pack some punch. Likewise with the Sandbar and Left hand reef break right in front of the cafes.

For those traveling with non-surfing companions, Echo Beach in Canggu has 3 main cafes near where the Sea Sentosa is being built. Non surfing companions can sit and have a drink and a proper meal or even some tapas in comfortable surrounds whilst getting a great view of the surfers below. There is even a salon that has opened up offering day spa like services for those that like a treat!

So, when looking for surf reports with where to go (or what board to bring when planning what to pack!) check out this site and specifically look at the following reports for our villa location:
- Canggu
- Berawa
- Batu Belong
- Pererenan
- Balian (about 1 hour drive west, but a good spot to visit)
